Parables of Jesus: "Assumptions"

Randy Christian

It is easy to make assumptions based on our own experiences — particular assumptions about our personal lives. But we all know assumptions can get us in trouble, and it is dangerous to assume without checking it out.

Parables of Jesus: "Strength"

Randy Christian

Broken things are rarely strong. Strength comes from not being broken, but brokenness can come individually and in community. In the U.S. right now, there is a lot of division — sometimes so strong that people who say they love one another are inviting the other to leave and never come back. But real strength comes in unity before the Lord, and there are specific steps we can take to limit the disunity and build on the unity God has given us.

Parables of Jesus: "Persistence"

Randy Christian

Sometimes the easy thing is to just stop — stop trying, stop talking to God, stop asking for help. But for some reason God wants us to persist, and Jesus teaches us that the very persistence we want to avoid might be exactly what we are needing.

Parables of Jesus: "Good Neighbors"

Randy Christian

So who exactly is this “neighbor” I’m supposed to love the way I love myself? How do I know? And what does that “love” look like? Your neighbor just may be someone you don’t like, and have trouble seeing yourself “loving”. But God can change all that and give you the ability to love your neighbors!

Parables of Jesus: "The Dirt They Live In"

Randy Christian

The gospel is like seed that is planted everywhere, so everyone has a chance to respond. But not everyone receives the gospel the same way. What’s the difference? In large part, how we receive the gospel is related to how we are made up individually. So, if we want people to have a chance to believe, we have to pay attention to the dirt they live in!

Parables of Jesus: "A Debt of Love"

Randy Christian

NOCC’s mission statement says we are here to facilitate a “passionate, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” Of course, not everyone demonstrates passion the same way— but everyone understands when they are feeling passion and when they are not. What’s the key to having this passion in our lives? Jesus explains it when he links the love we have for God with the experiences we have of forgiveness.

Parables of Jesus: "The New and the Old"

Randy Christian

Change can be welcomes or dreaded. But change does come, and, when it does, it often affects far more than what we are hoping for. Sometimes, when change needs to happen, it needs to happen broadly. How can we tell? And how can we handle the good changes?

Randy Christian

“Birthday Party for Jesus”

It isn’t about me, you, or our families. It’s about HIM! So, this year instead of having our normal services, we will worship the Lord by celebrating His birthday with a big Birthday Party for Jesus!

Christmas Is - Forgiveness

Randy Christian

So, do you struggle with forgiveness? Most people would see forgiveness as part of the “Christmas spirit”. But do they understand that forgiveness is actually the design of the original Christmas? Grace and Trust are given by Jesus and by us— and the result of that is forgiveness. When we understand that, we celebrate differently, because we are aware of the gift God has given us. AND we are able to pass that gift on to others because we have received it first!

Christmas Is - Trust

Randy Christian

Trust isn’t a word most people immediately associate with Christmas. But trust is part of faith— and faith is how we accept THE Christmas Present. So, what is trust? How do we trust— especially when we don’t FEEl trust? And how can we make trust a part of this Christmas celebration?

Christmas Is - Grace

Randy Christian

To understand Christmas, we have to first understand that Christmas is Grace! But “grace” is a “church word” — a word that is used in church gatherings by people who rarely can define or explain it to each other, much less to those in the world around them. We need to understand grace — and the inherent link between Christmas and grace. Because Christmas is grace!

What's Going On? - Perspective

Randy Christian

God promises several times in The Word that He will never give us more than we can handle, and that all things occur for the good. How, then, can we rationalize these facts when we face terrors such as cancer, war, death, and loss? It all boils down to perspective. We are humans, and, thus, we cannot see all that is happening or will happen. God is the only omnipresent being with the divine perspective. He knows all and sees all. This week, let us take the back seat and look at our lives through God’s perspective.
