John wrote his gospel for one reason, that those of us who read it would believe, and believing have life in Jesus. Now that we’ve studied through the gospel of John we need to ask a simple question. Do we believe? Do we have life? What kind of life has he given us?

The last hours of Jesus’ life are often referred to as “The Passion”. The reason is that the word “passion” used to mean more than intense desire for something—it meant intense feelings of many kinds, including suffering. Suffering isn’t a word most of us want to hear, but it was key to God’s plan. Jesus’ suffering defined his life and how he affected others. We need to understand his suffering and what it means in our lives today.

Jesus often spoke to his disciples at length. He intentionally spent time teaching them as a group to allow so them to hear him and learn from him. These times were important to him. If only I could see him, touch him, hear him—and see the amazing things he did—I could believe. So many of us assume our faith would be strengthened if we had the experiences people in the Bible stories had. The thing is, it didn’t seem to make much difference to them. Many of them saw and experienced these things and still didn’t give themselves to Him. So what does it take to believe?

They made an interesting family, and a simple dinner at their house highlighted how different people responded—and still respond—to Jesus. Resting in him, service, intense affection—and an anger that wouldn’t be calmed by anything less than a person’s destruction—all at the same time. Jesus evokes something different in each of us, but rarely does he evoke nothing!
